Fall From Grace (Mad World, #1)

Fall From Grace (Mad World, #1) - Christine Zolendz 2.5 Stars (that last half star is for the parts in between 60-90%)Don't hate me!!!!!!!Miss for me, for the most part. I almost stopped reading this one, in fact. My rule of thumb for dnf is that I must wait until I hit the 65% mark. If I still can't stand it enough by then and I'm able to skip the last 35% of the book, then it really isn't holding my interest. And I still feel justified rating and reviewing a book that I finished that big a chunk of. However, this one improved enough at about the halfway point that I really did want to figure out what was going to happen.Okay, (deep breath). I know that this seems to be a fan favorite, but I'm quite baffled by all of the high ratings. The editing was atrocious. I don't normally care about punctuation, but countless misspelled words and misused phrases leads me to believe that almost no one edited it at all. At least get a beta reader group or something. People pay money for your book. Show them your best, for goodness sake. Here is an example of a "Whaaaaa...?" moment from me:"...I'm choking because you're sitting there staring at me like the taste of your turkey wrap depends on your life."...the taste of your turkey wrap depends on your life? Huh? Shouldn't it be "like your life depends on the taste of your turkey wrap?" Anyways, moving on...I could overlook editing, and often do with the massive amounts of indie authors that I read. In this book, however, that minor grump in addition to the high school bitch that is Grace and her best friend Lea and their overly dramatized reactions, many drunken escapades, and the fact that the paranormal aspect of the story (the only aspect that was interesting) was only alluded to for nearly half of the book...well, it made for an eye rolling read for me. There are massive amounts of drama; i.e., bursting into laughter over a silly joke, screaming into faces over perceived insults and/or minor infractions of date etiquette...everything was just overdone. I felt like I was watching a soap opera. There seems to be a trend lately in this 'new adult' sub genre to see who can come up with the most self-absorbed heroine, give her a real man whore who suddenly turns into Romeo, and then make her overreact to every single situation and conversation that she's involved in. I just can't stomach it. I have to actually like the main characters...at the very least be able to empathize with them, and I couldn't do it with Grace. Why was the paranormal aspect such a secret? For me, I could have overlooked a lot of this book's faults had I actually been interested in the story line. But the first half was really stagnant. After I found out what was really going on, the plot really picked up and I found myself interested to the point that I stayed up late to finish. So the book for me vastly improves after about fifty percent. There is a huge, nasty cliffhanger at the end....another star taken off, in my already grumpy opinion. And while I really do want to find out how this story ends, I have a feeling that if I don't read the book NOW, it will sit and wait on my virtual shelf for months, bugging me until I cave one future day and finally read it. I don't actually think I want to at this point but we'll see. To my buddy readers, sorry I stayed silent. I just didn't want to bee the Eeyore to your happy bunch. I know tons of people really dug this one, it just wasn't for me!!
