The Book Thief - Markus Zusak (listened to audiobook, so spelling may be off.)I have to say that I was bored through about eighty percent of this book. I picked it up because it's on the 'best audiobook' list here on GR. And I must say, the narrator was amazing. That being said, the beginning was depressing, the middle was depressing, and the end was a sobfest. The few bright spots and happy moments were completely overshadowed by the writers need to tell the ending to the story while still in the middle of the book. He actually states, several times, that he is going to tell you who dies and how they die- and then proceeds to do just that. So I ended up bawling about fifty times. It would have been worth it if end the end I could have understood a bit about what happens to Liesel, the young girl that the story follows, but the narration of that was extremely vague, as is the explanation about the only other secondary character that I cared about. Though I was bored through a lot, I was still interested enough to come to care about all of the people involved, which is why I cried until my stomach hurt. This is not a happy ending book, which I suppose I should have expected. It is about World War II, and there weren't a lot of happy endings in Germany back then. I suppose I'm glad that I read (listened) to it. It's definitely not the norm for me, and I reiterated to myself why I like romance and complete fiction and fluff. This was very real.
